Sugar Wash ABV Calculator

Estimate the alcohol in a fermentation from its original and final specific gravity. Enter your hydrometer readings to get ABV, proof, and attenuation. This gravity-to-ABV calculator uses the same math as Spirit Sight.

The formula

ABV = (OG - FG) x 131.25; attenuation = (OG - FG) / (OG - 1) x 100

Standard gravity-to-ABV conversion (industry formula). This tool uses the same calculation as the Spirit Sight platform. It is general information, not tax or legal advice.

How do you calculate ABV from specific gravity?
Subtract final gravity from original gravity and multiply by 131.25. An OG of 1.080 finishing at 1.000 is (1.080 - 1.000) x 131.25, about 10.5% ABV.
What is attenuation in a sugar wash?
The percentage of sugar consumed by the yeast: (OG - FG) / (OG - 1) x 100. Higher attenuation means the yeast fermented more of the available sugar.
Why does the wash ABV matter before distilling?
The wash ABV sets how much alcohol enters the still, which drives your expected proof-gallon yield. Knowing it lets you plan spirit runs and barrel fills instead of guessing.
