Bottle Yield Calculator

Estimate how many bottles and cases a barrel yields after proofing down to bottling strength and accounting for processing loss. Enter the barrel and bottling details below. This tool uses the same audited proof-gallon and yield math as Spirit Sight.

The formula

volume at bottling = (barrel WG x barrel proof / 100) x 100 / bottling proof; bottles = usable volume / bottle size

27 CFR 5.22 (bourbon must be bottled at 80 proof minimum). This tool uses the same calculation as the Spirit Sight platform. It is general information, not tax or legal advice.

How many bottles are in a barrel of bourbon?
It depends on barrel volume, proof, and bottling strength. A typical 53-gallon barrel proofed down often yields about 150 to 200 750ml bottles; use the calculator with your exact numbers.
How many cases does a barrel make?
Divide the bottle yield by 12 for standard 750ml cases (or 6 for larger formats). A barrel yielding 180 bottles is about 15 cases of twelve.
What is processing loss?
Spirit lost during filtration, transfer, and bottling, commonly around 2%. The calculator subtracts it from usable volume before counting bottles.
